About the Picnic

About the Picnic

The annual Aboriginal Back to School Picnic (BTSP) initiative began in Victoria in 2003 as a small community celebration for a few children.

One urban Aboriginal community-based organization, Surrounded By Cedar Child and Family Services (SCCFS) sought financial and volunteer support from four sister agencies, the Victoria Native Friendship Centre (VNFC), the BC Association of Aboriginal Friendship Centres (BCAAFC), Hulitan Social Services and M’akola Housing Society and First Nations Education at School District 61 (Victoria) to develop and implement the first BTSP.

This initiative resulted in over 100 attendees and 45 backpacks of school supplies offered to urban Aboriginal children. No questions asked.

The program has grown and changed with guidance and support of SCCFS management and Board of Directors.

2017 Picnic Recap

The annual Aboriginal Back to School Picnics were once again so much fun for community, volunteers and staff alike. In 2017, SCCFS was pleased to welcome the Prince George Native Friendship Centre as a new delivery partner, making it the eleventh stop on our Picnic tour.

In Victoria supplies and gifts were provided to 1164 students ranging from pre-school to post secondary with a combined total of 3318 students province wide. The Picnic team traveled nearly 5000 km in total and hosted events in; Victoria, Duncan, Campbell River, Courtenay, Port Alberni, Nanaimo.

The team took a day off before traveling to Surrey, Mission, Prince George, Terrace and Prince Rupert. 11 events in 14 days.

In each community M’akola Housing staff and Friendship Centre staff came out to help us host their families and children and we are grateful for the chance to celebrate with our partners and the 11 communities.

We acknowledge the financial support of the province of BC, RBC Royal Eagles, Vanity, Rina M Bidin Foundation, Monk Office, University of Victoria, Ridley Terminals Inc, MNP, Out of the Blue Designs and in-kind contributions from our friends at Government House.
