Non-Protection Family Services (C3)

Focusing on the empowerment of Indigenous systems of caring for and protecting children, our Non-Protection Family Service Team provides a range of voluntary services to urban Indigenous families with an overall goal of ensuring urban Indigenous children and youth remain safely in the care of their parents, family or community members. Our team approaches their work with a deep understanding of the history of colonial violence that has harmed Indigenous families, and we strive to root our practice in Indigenous ways of nurturing, love, and caring while recreating space for families to reach out for help without judgement.

If your family may be at risk of becoming involved with the child protection system, or if you have had previous involvement, we can also work alongside you and your family.

What our team does:

Through our collaborative approach to working with the whole family, our Non-Protection Family Service Team offers the following:

  • Working closely alongside families, their Nations and other service providers to create plans that ensure families have the support they need to continue caring safely for their own children
  • Providing one-to-one parenting support in the home.

  • Completing referrals to programs like counselling, drug and alcohol treatment, cultural programs, and other services.
  • Helping parents navigate systems such as child welfare, health, education, legal, housing, childcare, etc.
  • Using culturally specific ways to enhance family wellness.
  • Working collaboratively with the urban Indigenous community to provide wrap- around services to families.
  • Facilitating voluntary or out-of-care agreements when children cannot stay in the family home, often on a temporary basis, including:

    • Extended Family Program
    • Voluntary Care Agreements
    • Special Needs Agreements

Please Note: Non-Protection Family Service Workers do not receive or respond to child protection reports. If you are concerned about the safety of a child, please call Provincial Centralized Screening at 1-800-663-9122.
